Tour of the North Bay Restoration Projects

Monday, 6 February 2017, 9 am – 5 pm

Overview: On this journey we will stop at several wetland restoration sites in the North Bay to witness firsthand the recovery of wetlands in the region.   Locations include stops in Napa, Solano, and Sonoma counties (with projects at Napa Sonoma Marshes, Cullinan Ranch, Skaggs Island, and Sears Point and Sonoma Baylands). The trip will include a no-host lunch and wine tasting at Viansa – a bird and wetland restoration friendly winery. 

 This field trip will be a good introduction of the area for Tuesday’s Special Session on the Restoration of Recovery of Sea Ducks Injured in Coastal Oil Spills, hosted by the US Fish and Wildlife Service and US Geological Survey. Delta Birding with Dolphin Charters – a boat tour through the Sacramento – San Joaquin River Delta

Friday, 10 February 2017, 6:30 am – 5 pm

 Overview: This all-day excursion brings us into the inland Delta which comprises one of the largest wetland restoration efforts in western North America. We will tour the inland waterways at a time when bird life is abundant with overwintering flocks of Lesser Snow Geese, Tundra Swans, Sandhill Cranes, Greater White-fronted Geese, Grebes, Surf Scoters, as well as numerous shorebirds and a few seabirds too! We will depart the Lodge at Tiburon at 8 am by bus to Antioch Harbor (about 1.5 h) and board the Dolphin Charter boat. Boat tours last about 5 hours and a boxed lunch will be provided along with coffee, tea, and water.

Point Reyes National Seashore and West Marin County

Depart Friday, 10 February 2017, 9 am and return Sunday, 12 February 2017, 5 pm

Overview: This two-night excursion to Point Reyes National Seashore and west Marin County will take us north along Highway 1 with stops at Stinson Beach before arriving at the beautiful Marconi Conference Center on Tomales Bay for dinner (included). On Saturday morning, following breakfast (included), we will tour the area stopping at various sites of interest including Inverness, Tomales State Park, the Pt. Reyes Lighthouse where whales are often sighted, Cypress Grove in Marshall (Audubon Canyon Ranch), and Abbot’s Lagoon. We should see a multitude of birds including Surf Scoters, Bufflehead, Brant, Ruddy Ducks, grebes, shorebirds, and seabirds! We will return to the Marconi Center for dinner, staying overnight and depart after breakfast to arrive back at the Lodge at Tiburon by dinner time on Sunday. Our conference rate at the Lodge at Tiburon extends through Sunday night, so guests may choose to overnight before departing.
